British Virgin Islands Post (BVIP) sent two members to observe operations at the Cayman Islands Postal Service (CIPS).

During the week-long training, Ruth Benjamin and Kimbrah Lettsome were introduced to the methods and the process which CIPS uses to sort its mail using the postcode.

In December of last year BVI Postmaster General Kevin Smith visited the Cayman Islands himself to see how CIPS handled mail using the postcode. He explained his reason for sending the two BVIP staff members. "We are looking to the Cayman Islands Postal Service as our more mature sibling for support and guidance with respect to the development of our core business.

"From my observation I noted that your administration has been efficient in its process. CIPS's input is invaluable and is playing a critical role in the development of the BVI Post," he added.

BVI introduced postcodes in October and since that time has been updating a number of its procedures on gathering statistics and finding the best ways to measure the quality and quantity of mail its sorters handle.

Ruth Benjamin said, "We are learning a great deal. A lot of what you are doing here we are going to be implementing so we can update our processes. Since the Cayman Islands launched their postcode in August and we launched ours in October, we are using the Cayman Islands to set our benchmark for postcode sorting."

Ms Benjamin also thanked CIPS staff members for their hospitality.

Postmaster General Sheena Glasgow said, "We are pleased to provide assistance to another administration and foster the relationship with the BVI. There is no reason why postal administrations shouldn't help each other by spreading good practices. At the end of the day mail service worldwide is only as good as the weakest postal service."
